Memories of Vacation Bible School -
Do you adults remember your Vacation Bible School days? I remember the cookies and Kool-Aid, the ceramic and popsicle stick crafts, the Bible stories and running around in the church yard! (I never remember any organized games...just running around like little monkeys) but that is MY memory. I also vividly remember playing with kids I didn’t know. The neighborhood kids from across the street or down the block that walked to the church to see what was happening on an otherwise boring, hot, summer morning. They would do all the activities and be just like us “church kids” except when it came to Bible time. All of us regulars would sit, and be still (usually because our mothers were sitting right behind us to teaching the lesson) but the visitors seemed to really be listening! Watching the teacher, eyes wide open, asking questions! Could it be that these kids had not heard the same Bible stories 100 times, we wondered? Could it be that they really didn’t know who Jesus was or if they did, not know He loved them?
Many times we never saw those kids again, but as an adult active in children’s ministry those kids are never very far from my mind.
I’m really sad as VBS director that it is no longer prudent for kids to walk down the street alone and check out what is going on in the backyard of a church and join the fun. But those neighborhood kids who do not attend church and don’t know the stories of Jesus by heart still exist. Maybe just as important as the planning of the games, and studying of the lessons, and practicing of the songs, and creating of the scenery is the act of invitation. I bet many of us know of a child who would benefit from a week of listening about the power of Jesus to change lives. Please consider acting on that knowledge. Invite them, bring them, stay and sing with them! They will have fun and you will be blessed!

Also, thank you to all who many a monetary donation for our VBS Kid-To-Kid Mission to send soccer balls to the children of South Africa. We have purchased 20 balls already! If you still wish to contribute, the balls are $10. Please note on your check or envelope the money is for “soccer balls”.
